Therapeutic Art

Creative Wellbeing Through Art

Sometimes it’s easier to pick up a paintbrush than find the words.

Art can provide a safe, relaxed way for children, young people and adults to explore their thoughts, build confidence and express themselves without the pressure of having to talk.

As a qualified teacher, professional artist and Therapeutic Arts Practitioner, I provide creative wellbeing sessions that are tailored to the individual. Every session is different because every person is different.

I work with schools, families and organisations, supporting children and young people experiencing anxiety, low self-esteem, school avoidance, SEMH needs, autism, ADHD, bereavement and other emotional challenges. I also work with adults who simply want time and space to reconnect with their creativity and improve their wellbeing.

No artistic ability is needed. The focus isn’t on creating the perfect picture – it’s about enjoying the creative process in a calm, supportive environment where people can feel safe to be themselves.

How I Can Help

I offer:

  • One-to-one creative wellbeing sessions
  • Small group sessions
  • School-based support
  • Home visits (where appropriate)
  • Creative wellbeing workshops
  • Community art projects
  • Bespoke programmes designed around individual needs

Every session is planned around the person rather than following a fixed programme.

My Background

Alongside my work as a professional artist, I have many years’ experience working within education, including mainstream schools, specialist settings and pupil referral units.

I have supported children and young people with a wide range of additional needs and understand that building trust always comes before expecting progress.

My doctoral research at the University of Central Lancashire also explores how professionals understand behaviour, giving me a deeper understanding of the importance of relationships, empathy and seeing beyond behaviour itself.

Testimonials

What schools say

Shiryn has provided ongoing art therapy for a number of our vulnerable pupils, including those who are PP, SEND, and CLA. She is consistently reliable, and pupils find her sessions both exciting and highly accessible. Shiryn creates a welcoming, supportive atmosphere in which pupils feel comfortable to engage and express themselves. After every session, she provides a detailed and insightful report, which is invaluable in helping staff continue to support pupils effectively by embedding appropriate strategies within the classroom.

Shiryn has also supported some of our most vulnerable SEMH pupils. In one case, she worked with a Year 9 student with ASD who had withdrawn from the school setting due to severe anxiety. Shiryn provided a 12-week programme of support within the family home, using art-based sessions to help the student slowly re-engage with daily life. During this time, the student made small but significant steps forward, including showing a willingness to leave their bedroom – which had been their safe space for a considerable period – and begin engaging in creative activities again.

Shiryn communicates very effectively with staff and provides clear, reflective reports following each session. These reports are extremely valuable in informing our provision, highlighting both progress and practical strategies that can be carried forward into the classroom and wider support planning. In the case of the Year 9 student, her reports also contributed useful evidence towards an Early Help process to increase support for the family.

She is reliable, professional, and highly skilled in her work with vulnerable pupils. Her sessions form an important part of our graduated response for pupils with SEND and other additional needs, and I would not hesitate to recommend her to other schools looking to strengthen their therapeutic support for young people.
